Damaged or infected teeth can be removed in a process known as extraction. This becomes necessary when:
Extraction can prevent infection from spreading to other teeth or bodily tissues and are done in either a surgical procedure or a less complicated process using forceps and local anesthesia. Once the tooth or teeth have been extracted, an implant can easily be used to fill the gap.
Wisdom teeth extraction is also a common treatment for impacted wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teth do not fully erupt into the mouth because of blockage from other teeth or insufficient space in the jaw. Pain is commonly experienced due to the inflammation, infection, or damage to the surrounding teeth as they develop.
Before the tooth is extracted, the tooth and surrounding gums will be numbed with local anesthesia. If the tooth has not erupt and still lie under the gums, a small incision is needed to remove the tooth. Most people will experience pain and swelling for a couple of days after the operation. It can take up to 4-6 weeks for patients to be fully recovered with full range of jaw movements.
